Did you know, that part of a physical therapist's scope of practice is to give nutritional advice?
This may be controversial to some, however, as movement specialists, the quality of our patients’ tissues, muscles, tendons, and bones, as well as overall health, are directly related to nutrition and what is put into their body. At Physio On The Go, we have the tools to be able to assist your nutritional habits. In doing this, we can decrease chronic inflammation which wreaks havoc on your body and can affect your joint, muscle, and bone health. Think of it this way, physical therapists are like the mechanics for your muscles, tendons, and bones. If underlying issues are preventing the health of all of those tissues, physical therapy is going to be tough. I’ve heard from colleagues and have seen it in my own practice where patients just don’t seem to get better even though they have gone through treatment. A lot of it boils down to what they're putting in their body. Food is medicine. Many of the things that are healthy for us and important for us to do to maintain a healthy lifestyle takes effort. Here at Physio On The Go, we can help guide you along the way path. We are realistic with the limitations of life, with respect to both time and finances, and we want to give you the tools to achieve your goals. This is our friend and client, Chris, who came to us after suffering an achilles rupture 3 years ago--and decided to not get it surgically repaired.
Chris is a pretty avid runner, and after a year--yes, you read that right--an entire YEAR of PT through his insurance with a large healthcare system, he was still unable to run more than 1/4 mile without his foot, ankle and calf being painful, fatigued, and "slapping" the ground on every stride. He became so discouraged because he is used to running 4-5 miles a few times a week, plus he also started to develop a lot of knee and low back pain from compensating for his injury. Chris was introduced to us through a mutual friend, and understandably had some reservations and skepticism regarding doing his PT online. After taking some time discuss it with his significant other, and having a consultation with us and some follow-up discussions with us about our experience with injuries like his, what our process is, the approach/plan we had in mind for him--he decided to book his online evaluation and planning session with us where we did a deep dive into his biomechanics, lifestyle, and nutrition. We laid out an 8 week plan of care specific to his needs, and the results were profound! After just 8 weeks of PT with us, he was back running 4-5 miles and feeling better than ever!! (Keep in mind, he had just recently came to us after doing AN ENTIRE YEAR of PT at a large healthcare system. We won't name names here, but he was only given one session every 1-2 weeks in this system--which doesn't allow for individualized and strategically targeted rehab program.) He described feeling "more fluid" with his mechanics, didn't have the calf fatigue and soreness, the foot "slapping" stopped, and did not complain of back pain anymore. As you can hear from his testimonial, he found there was tons of value in choosing this model of physical therapy, and well worth investigating! Paul is an avid surfer and mountain biker, but also needed to be able to keep up with his daughter who is a great high school tennis player, and be able to go on walks and hike with his family and their dog. Unfortunately, his hip pain was preventing him from doing any of that without paying dearly for it after. The pain was so bad that it was also affecting his sleep--NOT GOOD! He eventually got one of the hips replaced, after which he successfully returned to doing all of his activities with out post-op program, but then the other hip started limit him in the same way, with even worse pain--the difference this time around was that Paul wanted to put off having another hip replacement as long as possible. Fast forward 3-4 years later he is now back to surfing on shortboards at some pretty high performance surf spots and is more stoked than ever... and also going on mountain bike trips riding on long technical trails, and now can even keep up with his daughter in tennis (and claims to be giving her a run for her money--though we may need witnesses to substantiate that claim lol!!!). No matter what the facts may be, we are so happy for him! To watch Paul discuss his journey and how valuable he found this model of physical therapy, click the following link.
